![]() ![]() The best course of action is to suck it up and upgrade your Tivo. Although I contributed to their kickstarter, I'm very pessimistic about them ultimately delivering a working solution. At the moment, its guide features are terrible, and copy protected content doesn't work. Here are some of those programs (you can only use ones with Cable Card Support, noted in the second table):Īnother possible option in the future is Silicon Dust's DVR software, still in beta. If you don't have any premium channels and your other channels are all copy freely, you could also use several third party DVR programs, but each will require a paid subscription for guide data. Selling your old Tivos would more than cover that, making such an upgrade essentially free. I think you are entitled to $99 lifetime on new Tivos given your history with them, making it possible for you to upgrade for well under $200 including equipment and fees. The features and overall experience is far better with Tivo, and overall cost lower (I paid $300 for a 4 tuner Roamio with lifetime plus several Minis at $100 each with free lifetime). I recently sold off my WMC system and switched TO Tivo. Development of WMC ceased many years ago. Also realize that, like Tivo, a WMC system will not last forever as it was discontinued with the release of Windows 10. For a two TV system, expect to pay at least $600 to get started, assuming you buy some parts used. You'll need a PC running Win 7/8/8.1, tuner (Ceton or Silicon Dust) and extender at each TV (Xbox 360, Ceton Echo, Linksys or D-link). ![]() Out-of-home streaming : Tablo and Plex both allow you to watch. The only other fully functional option with cable card is Windows Media Center. TiVo has four tuners, Tablo has two- and four-tuner options, and HDHomeRun lets you daisy-chain multiple dual-tuner units together. Like it or not, unless you cut the cord completely, Tivo has you by the you-know-whats. Cable company DVRs are just as terrible as ever, not even in the same ballpark as Tivo. A single DVR with DirecTV is now around $25/month in fees alone. So while you may get some personal satisfaction sticking it to Tivo, they won't even notice, and it will cost you a huge amount of money. With Dish, DirecTV or your cable company's DVR, you're really going to pay through the nose. But you're only hurting yourself by not taking advantage of the cheap Tivo upgrades available to you as such a long-time customer. I realize there are some sour grapes since a few features of your old equipment have been forced obsolete by Tivo. ![]()
